Elf (Discharge Update)

Elf has been discharged, and is resting comfortably. He is on 3 medications for pain & inflammation, and will be on restricted activity for the next 8 weeks.

The staff and surgeon at Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Towson, Maryland has been amazing! We called so many places that were closed this week and not opening again until next week. CVSS was able to schedule our consultation for Wednesday, Elf stayed for surgery on Thursday, and here it is Friday, New Year's Eve, and he is already back at Humphrey House for Homeless Animals!

Our balance today was $945.00 after our initial deposit of $3,000.00. Thanks to our amazing supporters, the bill is now paid in full. 😍 We are so blessed at the outreach of support for our sweet little Elf.

Elf will have his sutures removed in 10 days, then follow-up X-rays in 8 weeks.

Stay tuned for updates as our little Elf heals. 💗

Stay safe and have a Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉

Elf (Surgery Update)

Although surgery was more complicated than we had hoped for, surgery is complete and Elf is currently resting comfortably.

The pre-surgery X-ray showed that Elf also has a broken tail. (Something we could not see on his original X-ray.) It is broken at the base of his spine, but will not need further treatment as long as it doesn't bother him.

For Elf's hip, the surgeon tried to place the screw using a minimally invasive technique, but was unsuccessful. Elf's hip was to hard to maneuver, and a piece of the bone broke off. There was also a lot of scar tissue to get through, so they ended up having to make a full incision to complete the procedure. In the end, they were able to place the screw successfully, and Elf is currently resting comfortably.

Elf (Consultation Update)

Update on sweet little Elf. 💗

Elf had a consultation with the orthopedic surgeon this morning. The biggest issue is his hip, not necessarily his broken pelvis. His hip is out of place where it should be supported by his spine. Right now, nothing is holding his hip in place. So the plan is to use a screw to reattach his hip to his spine. This can be done with a minimally invasive procedure. Once his hip is aligned, the pelvic fracture will heal itself over time. (I am explaining the procedure as best I can. Of course the specialist uses much bigger words, and explained proper protocol.)

The good news is that the vet's surgeon can do the surgery tomorrow! Elf is staying overnight at the vet so he will be ready for surgery first thing in the morning. After surgery, Elf is expected to have a recovery time of about 8 weeks. We will have more updates once Elf's surgery is complete.

The bad news is that the surgery will be anywhere from $2,800.00 to $3,600.00. Add $200.00 for today's consultation, that brings the total to anywhere between $3,000.00 to $3,800.00...plus any follow-up care, of course. (That's after the rescue discount of 10%.)

Thanks to our generous donors who have been very supportive this holiday season, we were able to leave a deposit today of $3,000.00! We are so grateful that we were able to do that without hesitation so we can provide Elf with the best care possible.

Overall, the deposit paid today does leave the rescue hurting for funds to cover the difference that will be due upon pick up on Friday, and for the continued care of the others at our rescue. Sam (Basset Hound / Beagle tripod) will soon need a follow-up visit after his leg amputation. And we have a severely neglected Pittie arriving soon from North Carolina. (Stay tuned for more info on Happy Gilmore.)

Consider making a tax deductible donation to Humphrey House for Homeless Animals to help us continue to provide vet care for the pups in need.

Thank you again for everyone's support. We can't continue saving lives without you! We wish everyone a safe and happy New Year!

Elf is still looking for a quiet home to recover in where he'll spend his golden years being spoiled. Contact us through our Facebook Page to inquire about making your home Elf's furever home.

Welcome Elf to Humphrey House

Elf is a sweet 8 year old male Chihuahua that is being treated for a broken pelvis.

Elf was found as a stray running the streets in South Carolina. The local shelter was closing for Thanksgiving break, so the person who found Elf was keeping him at their home in the meantime. Elf escaped their yard and was attacked by the neighbor's larger dog. Elf suffered several puncture wounds, a ruptured testicle, and his pelvis was crushed. Elf was taken to a vet and neutered right away, removing the ruptured testicle. He was also vaccinated and microchipped while waiting to be transported to Maryland. Now that Elf has arrived, we will consult with an orthopedic surgeon to address his broken pelvis.

Elf is such a sweet little boy. He is currently underweight at only 3 pounds (a healthy weight for him should be around 5 pounds). Elf is currently on crate rest and pain medications while we search for the right vet to treat him.

We are so grateful to the volunteer transporters who drove all day to get Elf to Humphrey House for Homeless Animals just in time for Christmas. 💗🎄 Transporters save lives!

Sam (Update)

Sam is recovering nicely from his leg amputation. He still has a long way to go, but he is adjusting well to life as a tripod.

Sam gets around fine, although slow. He loves just laying in the yard (we have to limit his time outdoors), and he can surprisingly go up and down steps without any issue.

We recently received our holiday donation box from Max and Neo CBD which included several items to help Sam. Items included were a super soft blanket for him to rest on, a cute little squeaky toy, and a bottle of CBD oil among other things.

Initially, we couldn't get Sam to eat ANY dog food or treats. We tried wet food, dry food, lots of treats, etc. We ended up giving him roasted chicken so we could get him to take his meds. After the chicken, we again offered him the freeze dried treats from the donation box and he actually ate them! With that, I was able to drip the CBD oil on the treats and he was resting comfortably a short time later.

Stay tuned for more updates on sweet Sammy. I'm sure he can't wait to have the staples and cone removed.

Max and Neo CBD donates a bottle of CBD oil to the rescue or shelter of your choice for every bottle purchased through https://maxandneocbd.com/. We have been fortunate enough to receive several donations throughout the year that were used for our seniors with arthritis, dogs with seizures, and general anxiety.

Welcome Sam to Humphrey House

Sam is an 11 year old Beagle mix. He has the larger body like a Basset Hound. He was surrendered due to his owner being homeless in addition to Sam needing emergency vet care for a large tumor on his leg.

This is Sam's story...

A woman was doing laundry at a laundromat when a homeless man walked in with Sam, an 11 year old Beagle. Sam had a sock wrapped around his front leg, which had a large, bleeding mass that smelled horrible (indicating likely a bad infection and necrotic tissue). The homeless shelter where the man had been staying would not allow pets, so Sam was not allowed inside (which was bad enough with the cold, but made worse with his leg). His owner desperately wanted to get Sam the medical care he needed and get him somewhere warm and safe. The good samaritan was moved by the man's plea and his love for his dog, so she promised him she would get help for Sam and find him a new home. He surrendered Sam to her.

Sam was taken to Homeward Bound Vet where they did surgery to remove the mass, but ended up needing to amputate his leg. As of now, he is recovering well.

Other than his leg, Sam seems to be in good health. He is neutered, heartworm negative, and his overall bloodwork looks good. They did not see any other health issues, and said he is the sweetest boy.

The good samaritan agreed to take Sam home after his surgery and said she can keep him temporarily while Sam is quiet and calm. Having an unexpected special needs dog is a little much for her with everything else she has going on right now. They needed to find him a foster or rescue ASAP so he can heal and recover in a safe, loving home.

We are eternally grateful that the good samaritan got Sam this far. Now Humphrey House for Homeless Animals will take over and foster Sam during his recovery until he finds his forever home.

Welcome Natasha to Humphrey House

The moment I have been dreading. 😂

Natasha is a 6 month old puppy. She is a small breed, currently weighing 9 pounds. She is a Yorkie mix, possibly with Australian Terrier, and considered hypoallergenic (which no dog is truly hypoallergenic, just low shedding).

So, before everyone blows up my phone, please read ALL about her!

Natasha is a sweet girl that has done well with my dogs and cats. She has SEVERE separation anxiety. Natasha becomes a totally different dog when left alone, or in a crate. She will bark and work herself up until she can't even breathe. She has a loud, high-pitched bark that will drive your neighbors crazy.

Natasha needs a home that can handle her high energy, and where someone is home most of the time.

All Natasha wants is to be with her person. She's a total lap dog. Natasha would LOVE another young dog to play with (her energy is most likely too high for a senior dog).

Natasha is a little thin, and has a little more growing to do. I don't expect her to be more than 15 pounds when fully grown. She is a runner, jumper, and a chewer.
